I became a cop in 1993 and kept a pocket journal with me throughout my career. I ended up with dozens of notebooks filled with notes on things I’d seen / heard / done over the years, and when I retired in 2018 I started thinking about writing a novel.
My first book, The Crystal Birdcage, explores what people are capable of doing to survive an Apocalypse. It was borne out of a thought experiment I played around with during the Pandemic, and themes of hope, fear, and desperation play out accordingly. Once I got the feel for the writing process, the sequel, The Harbinger Crow, came quickly. The third and final installment in the greatest apocalyptic love story ever written* - The Valkyrie’s Embrace - will be published by the end of this year!
The Iron Pig, published in April 2026, is a composite police story based on material I collected during my last five years on the job. Almost all of the scenes and dialogue actually took place (names and locations have been altered of course), and the story turned out to be a personal reflection on how the job has changed over the years and the impact it’s had on individual officers.
As well, you subscribe to my blog if you like the idea of becoming a writer and creating a novel of your own one day. I’ll be using it to illustrate how I - a newbie writer who had no clue as to how this all worked just a few short years ago - punched out three books in three years, with another on the way.
Heck, I’ll even (barf) talk about the publishing end of things, and lessons I learned the hard way!
Stay tuned - new posts coming soon :-)
